Before joining the Pride, Mills spent six years at her alma mater, North Carolina Wesleyan University as an assistant coach.
While at N.C. Wesleyan, Mills assisted in leading the team to its first (2019) USA South regular season title since 1996. She also helped the team to the 2021 East Division title and USA South Conference Championship round.

Mills is a 2013 Wesleyan graduate with a bachelor’s degree in Psychology. As an undergraduate, Mills was a four-year letter winner in softball and two-year letter winner in basketball for the Bishops.
In softball, she twice garnered USA South First Team All-Conference honors at first base as well as team MVP for the Bishops two years in row. Mills went on to serve one season as a student assistant softball coach for head coach Brackett while completing her degree.
