North Carolina Wesleyan University Baseball
Greg Clifton is entering his fifth season as head baseball coach at North Carolina Wesleyan University after assuming the post in June of 2018. In the spring of the same year, he captured his second straight NCIHSAA State Championship at nearby Faith Christian School.
Clifton served as head coach at FCS for seven seasons from 2012 to 2018, posting a record of 133-36 and securing five conference championships. He led the Patriots to a trio of State Championship appearances in 2012, 2013, and 2016 before winning back-to-back titles in 2017 and 2018. Clifton made notable improvements to Faith’s baseball complex during his tenure, turning it into one of the premier NCIHSAA fields in the state.
His additional experience includes stints as head coach for the North Carolina State Games, the Ironhorses Summer Showcase, and American Legion Post 38, as well as assistant coaching positions at both Northern Nash and Bunn High Schools. Having logged over 20 years of experience at the high school level, Clifton has had the privilege of coaching several players that have gone to enjoy successful collegiate careers.
During his time with the Bishops, Clifton has led the program to two east division championships, and coached multiple All-Region, and all USA South honorees. Also under his guidence, the program made their first NCAA Tournament appearance in nearly a decade, and had the baseball program’s first All-American since 2008.
Off the field, the Roanoke Rapids native has served as owner and vice president of Cenplex Building Services since 2003, providing leadership and direction for 650 employees in 60 different sites across the state of North Carolina.
In his tenure at Wesleyan, the Battling Bishops have made two NCAA Tournament appearances, produced two All-Americans, won the first USA South title since 2009, and hosted a regional under the lights at Bauer Field.
In addition to his coaching duties, Clifton handles field maintenance for the Vernon T. Bradley, Jr. lacrosse and Don Scalf soccer practice fields.

Former NC Wesleyan and USA South Pitcher of the Year Derrick Carter is in his second t season as Pitching Coach for the Battling Bishops.
A native of Rocky Mount, NC and Northern Nash HS, Carter was the Bishop’s ace pitcher the past two seasons as a left-handed starter.
He was a 3x Conference Pitcher of the Week and won 16 games over the past two seasons including going 8-3 in 2022 with a team-best 2.64 ERA and 5 complete games while striking out a team-high 102 batters over 95 innings.
Carter was a member of the National Honor and Leadership Society and majored in Business Administration.

Carter will also serve as Head JV Coach for the baseball program.
In his first year as pitching coach, Carter’s pitching staff produced the program’s first All-American since 2009 and hoted the first regional in Rocky Mount since 2006.
Derrick resides in Rocky Mount with his wife, Hannah and three children, Makenna, Liam, and Annaleigh.
