Jason Burke is entering his ninth season as head coach of the Lander baseball program. Burke became the Bearcats’ sixth baseball coach when he was hired in August 2016.
Coach Burke was named the Peach Belt Conference’s Coach of the Year after leading the Bearcats to a successful season in 2024. The team finished with an overall record of 38-15 and 21-6 in conference play. In addition, his leadership helped Lander claim its first regular-season Peach Belt Conference title since 2014. Under Burke’s guidance, Ethan Wilder was named the PBC Player of the Year and earned a spot on the All-PBC first team in the shortstop position. Connor Droze also joined Wilder on the first team as a designated hitter. Lander also held four spots on the All-PBC second team. Throughout the 2024 season, the baseball team earned four Player of the Week honors, two Pitcher of the Week honors, and three Freshman of the Week honors. Ethan Wilder (First Team) and Connor Droze (Second Team) were also recognized on the D2CCA Southeast All-Region, NCBWA Southeast All-Region, and ABCA All-Region Southeast teams.
Nicholas Popp was named the Assistant Head Baseball Coach in the summer of 2023.
Popp comes from Belmont Abbey where he’s been an assistant since 2014. With Popp on staff, the Crusaders made the 2016, 2018, 2022 and 2023 NCAA Regionals.
Popp has played for and coached under a pair of former Bearcats as well.
As an undergrad, Popp played for former Lander Head Coach and Hall of Famer Kermit Smith while at Belmont Abbey. Popp recently coached under Chis Anderson, who was an assistant with Smith during his time in Greenwood.
Coach Buckley enters his fourth year with the Bearcats. He was hired in the fall of 2021.
Buckley played four years at Florida Atlantic University from 2011 to 2014 where he was part of two Conference Championship teams. He most recently served as an infield and hitting coach with the Palm Beach Extreme in the South Florida Collegiate League from 2019-2021.
Alex Moore returns to Greenwood as a graduate student in 2022.
The Sarasota, Fla., native pitched for the Bearcats between 2018 and 2019 after transferring from Eckerd College. He threw 125.1 innings for the Blue and Gold while retiring 149 batters.
Moore was drafted in the 2019 MLB Draft by the Chicago Cubs and most recently threw for the Hartford Yard Goats and Spokane Indians. Moore became the ninth and Bearcats to be drafted in program history.
