Josh Freeman comes to Ferrum after serving as head coach of Northeast Texas Community College from 2020-2023. While at NTCC, he inherited a team that won four games prior to his arrival and led the program to their most wins and best finish in conference play this past season. During his time with the Eagles, he coached four all-conference players, most in school history, and the first all-region player in team history.
Cooney comes to Ferrum from the University of Mount Olive in North Carolina, where she was a four-year starter for the Trojan softball team and was a two-time All-American outfielder. A rare four-time All-Region first team selection, she was also a four-time All-Conference first team selection in Conference Carolinas. Cooney holds 11 school records at Mount Olive, including season batting average (.503), career batting average (.443), career hits (282), season hits (84), career runs (193), season runs (65), career stolen bases (136), season stolen bases (46), game stolen bases (6), career triples (11) and game hits (4).
Cooney was Mount Olive’s Outstanding Student-Athlete of the Year as a junior in 2023, then earned Easton/National Fastpitch Coaches Association All-America Scholar-Athlete honors her senior year in 2024.
